renovator,

I'm not sure if you bought a chop box yet but if your still thinking about a rigid. A buddy of mine i do work with from time to time just bought the rigid 12" miter saw.

I had the chance to use it this weekend and i have to admit it is a nice saw. It cuts very true and is easy to use.

I will say that it seems to me rigid put alot of time into researching thier line of power tools when thye came out with all thier new stuff. I think they looked at all the differant breands on the market and took the best features from all of them.

My personal favorite however if the dewalt line of miter saws. i don't think there is much comparison when it comes to chop boxes, even though i'm not a dewalt fan in genreal.

you could always buy both and be your own judge.

Renovator,

I have had a Ridgid saw for 6 months now and I love it. I have cut everything from pressure treated lumber to 1/2 inch quarter round and I have had zero problems. It is realatively quiet, ergonomically designed, easily adjusted, and most importantly, accurate.

Before I bought mine I spoke to another contractor who had been using one for a year and it was on his suggestion that I purchased the Ridgid over a Dewalt.

I have since purchased four other Ridgid power tools and, with the exception of the keyless chuck sticking on the drill after being used in hammer mode, I enjoy using each one and I will continue to replace worn out tools with Ridgid products.

Thks Dan;
I should have made it clear that I was looking at the sliding compound mitre saw. Is this the beast you are speaking of? Ridit is new to our area, but she looks so sweet.

No, I have the 12 inch compound mitre saw, but I cannot see how the sliding saw would be any less dependable.

A little background on Ridgid. They started off providing professional grade plumbing tools. Power pipe threaders, cutters, benders, etc. They decided to get into the power tool arena but only at a professional grade level. They do a lot of market research before designing and releasing a new tool. I received this information from a guy who used to work for a company that represents and distributes Ridgid tools in the area. Since he no longer works for the company and has no incentive to sell the product, I tend to believe him. I am also going off my personal experience with the five Ridgid tools I currently own.

Hope this helps.

Let us know what you decide.

Re: Ridit Compond Mirte Saw 3 Years, 8 Months ago
I own the Ridgid 12" sliding compound miter saw. (mitRE, for the canuck)
here is why I prefer the Ridgid to the DeWalt:

It has a larger "work area" Its much easier to balance a 2X12 on it.
It fits perfectly on the "utility vehicle" stand that is available at HD
I install a LOT of crown molding, most of it over 6", so I cut it flat. The Ridgid saw has excellent stops at 31.6 and 33.9 with the DeWalt, you have to reach behind the tool to un clamp the tilt, and then you have to flip over the little stop before it will stop at 33.9 degrees.
Ridgid miters to 62 degrees both ways. (Dewalt does 60/50)

They are both 15 amp and 4000rpm. They are both the same price (2 dollar price difference here in California, I think.)

When it comes time to replace this saw, I already know I'll be replacing it with one of the same.
