how do you get business referrals? 1 Year, 4 Months ago
hey everyone,

I just quit a job with a small contracting firm and am striking it out on my own, and starting my own contracting company. For now I am just sticking with what I have done in the past, individual work on homes, kitchens, bathrooms etc.

I am trying to build up a client _base_ - how do those of you with your own businesses get buisness referrals? Do you use word of mouth or websites or what? Do you use forums like this one? On another board someone mentioned businessnetworkingme.com and some other referral sites. Anyone know anything about it, or if these referral sites work?

thanks

Alex

That's a fine line you walk there. You don't want to make your other contracting company mad because they could sue which is never fun. Now, you have to find clients that you know they wouldn't touch. Ones that were either too small or not enough money in them for the company. Then get them, from there say "Hey, if you liked my service right? {right} Then pass my card along to your friends." That's what I did for a while and it worked out great. Granted I was in website design sales, but still.

Also, one thing you might want to look into is Get A Supplier (Get A Supplier) they could help you get your bids out faster. Which as you know is the key to almost everything.

Take care and see you around,
Chad

Forgot to add, that most of the referrals you can get are simply by asking for them. Also, ask the customer if they could write down names of other people that they think would be interested in your business. Ask the customer if it would be all right to use their name as a reference. Then follow up and make the calls.

It's a textbook way of doing things and you will be getting referrals in no time,

Have you heard of ServiceMagic? They send you contact info from the homeowners that go to them looking for contractors. I was going to try them, but I'm kinda busy now. But I did some research and found that they have free preview, where you sign up to see what kind of homeowners come to them for help.

www.servicemagicpros.com

Let me know how it works, I'll be contacting them in a month or two.
