Stimulus plans good for construction

Gothenburg Tram, Gothenburg, SwedenPresident-elect Obama held his first news conference today, to lay out his action plan going into the White House.

According to the Associated Press (emphasis ours):

“The No. 1 priority, Obama said, is to get Congress to approve an economic stimulus plan that would extend jobless benefits, send food aid to the poor, dispatch Medicaid funds to states and spend tens of billions of dollars on public works projects. If the plan is not approved this month, in a special session of Congress, Obama said that “it will be the first thing I get done as president of the United States.”"

“Public works projects” - that’s roads and bridges and schools and government buildings, all sorts of infrastructure repairs, renovations, and brand new projects. Money will be channeled from the federal level down through the individual state to the local level for all sorts of infrastructure work.

Are you ready to capitalize on this opportunity? Do you understand your local government bid process, are you positioned to be on the receiving end of this funding? Start getting your ducks in a row. Begin by googling “public works [your town]” and “RFP” and see what current opportunities come up. Poke around your local government websites, see what projects are being floated soon out for bidding.

You can ask all kinds of questions about your local and state public works projects bid process by contacting your Small Buisness Admistration. They should be able to point you to all sorts of excellent local info for your area.

Don’t forget the guys and gals over at SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), they are a fountain of useful information based on the “been there, done that” principle.

Also, start reading up on the requirements for government public works. Here’s some great titles to get you started in understanding the world of Public Works:

Standard Plans For Public Works Construction

Greenbook Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction

Public Works Inspectors’ Manual

BNI Public Works Costbook 2009
