interested in construction... 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Hi,
I am looking at starting my own construction business in the next year or two, I have already planned what it is I want my business to do, the market, the equipment that I am going to need, but my question is....
I need to know more about "polyurethane insulation foam"...is there any courses that need to be taken for this?
I know my business won't be up and started for awhile but it doesn't hurt to start early right?

Hey Justagirl:

I have started my own residential building remodeling business here in New England. But I have had some help. I have a partner who is a forty-year carpenter with vast residential and commercial experience. He's a great mentor. He teaches me, works in the field and I work with him and also do the management end. He doesn't care about that, just as long as he gets his share. I also find most guys are flattered that a woman is interested in their work and they are very supportive.

Ignore the ones who aren't, they are losers generally anyway.

I also have enrolled at the local tech college for the degree program in construction tech and also a degree program in biz management. its a lot and I had to scale back because the business is growing, but I find the education I got has been invaluable, much less the connection I made with instructors.

I suggest that you work in the field, even as a laborer or as an apprentice carpenter, get to know some people and start learning and talking about your desire to go into business, I'm sure you'll find some support.

Also, don't forget the oldtimers! Like I said my partner is a forty-year carpenter. He's no spring chicken, but he loves the idea of passing on his knowledge. You'd be surprised how many guys would love to be able to have a mentor! I can't speak for women, because I haven't found any around here yet in the trades.

So in summary...check out your local schools for programs for building; check out the union for apprenticeships and educational opportunities, get to know experienced carpenters and/or business people.

Good LUck! I hope you see this post and tell us how your idea is coming along!

JAG,
Have you read the post about foam insulation in the "General" forum?? I can't give the member's name, here, but there's a person down there who does this...it might be a chance to talk to someone who'd be able to give you a "mini-mentoring"!
The member posted the message in the "What type of contractor are you?" thread.
Good luck! I admire you for having the courage to go after what you want!!

Polyurethanes are widely used in high resiliency flexible foam seating, rigid foam insulation panels, micro cellular foam seals and gaskets, durable elastomeric wheels and tires, automotive suspension bushings, electrical potting compounds, high performance adhesives and sealants, Spandex fibers, seals, gaskets, carpet underlay, and hard plastic parts. For more information on this you can refer to http://generalcontractors411.com/
